Here is a non-exclusive list of outreach opportunities you might consider (in no particular order): YouthNet: is the Anglican Church's ministry to youth in Halifax's inner city. YouthNet is an umbrella outreach initiative which reaches out in various ways to the youth of the inner city neighbourhood surrounding Saint George's. Programmes include Mentoring, Lunch-time drop-in centre, Music and Drama programs, Culture Club, Wilderness Camping, Summer Day Camps, Scouts Canada programs of Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts, to name some. To volunteer for any individual YouthNet program, or to simply find out more, contact Adrianna MacKenzie-Hart. In March 2009, YouthNet launched their own website, available here Soup Kitchen : In November 2006 the Saint George's Soup Kitchen celebrated 23 years of operation. Operating out of the parish hall on Saturday afternoons, the Soup Kitchen is a collaborative effort involving a number of parishes and community groups. These groups and individuals are involved in a variety of ways - from preparing meals to picking up donated food, setting up the hall, and cleaning up afterward. Scouting: Saint George's Parish is a Sponsor for Scouts Canada Youth Programs. We offer co-ed programs for 5-16 year olds through Beavers (ages 5-7), Cubs (8-10), Scouts (11-14) and Venturers (14-18). Most of the children involved are from the north end, inner city community where the church is situated, and from the parish, a substantially gathered membership. Consequently the youth participants come for a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. 2nd Halifax was first chartered in 1920 and operated with Cubs and Scouts until 1962, the same time that Scotia Square was being developed displacing many families from the down town vicinity. The Group was reactivated in 1983. More... Christmas Outreach - includes the outreach opportunities listed below or click here. Christmas Family Outreach: This programme provides food hampers and gifts for neighbourhood families in need. Stepping Stone Christmas Dinner: Stepping Stone is an organization that provides support to women and men who are working the streets and their families. In December 2008, St George's hosted the eleventh Annual Stepping Stone Christmas Dinner. Saint George's and Stepping Stone jointly plan and manage the event. Mission to Seafarers Christmas Shoeboxes: In conjunction with the Mission to Seafarers in Halifax, parishioners and the Sunday School participate in the Christmas Shoebox Programme, which provides gift boxes to seafarers in port (and away from home) each Christmas. 36 boxes were delivered to the Mission in 2002. These items may be left in the Mission to Seafarers Shoebox Programme donation box at the back of the church. |
