Refugee Sponsorship Committee

February 10, 2016: The Refugee Sponsorship Committee and supporters are rejoicing in the news that our sponsored family, now waiting in Jordan, welcomed a baby boy on January 26. We now anticipate their arrival in a few weeks.
To help prepare for their arrival, we continue to seek donations of household goods and baby items. See below for links to registries of necessary items.
St. George’s Refugee Sponsorship is now an official charity of the Bluenose Marathon! This means that you can join our team of runners, or pledge donations towards our fundraising goal. The goal of our Bluenose team is to raise $10,000 to support current and future sponsorships. Join us to walk or run in a variety of events, or make a pledge, by visiting our official Bluenose page.
Upcoming event:
A Benefit for a Syrian Refugee Family: “When the Trumpets Thunder”
On Saturday, March 5, a variety of local Halifax artists will perform during an afternoon of music at the Company House on Gottingen St. All proceeds will support St. George’s Refugee Sponsorship. Admission by donation (suggested $10). Drop for a few hours of music during this event, which runs 11am-4pm.

January 25, 2016: St. George’s Refugee Sponsorship Committee is now awaiting the arrival of our first sponsored family, who are now living in Jordan. This family of four (father, mother, and children ages 4 and 6) will soon be a family of five, as they are expecting a baby soon. We look forward to welcoming this family when they arrive in Halifax in March! Through Skype calls and emails, the family has told us that they look forward to coming to Canada, and we have shared our joyful anticipation for their arrival.

There are many volunteer opportunities as we prepare for the arrival of this family. We are collecting donated furnishings and baby items. You can sign up to donate household items by following this link (http://www.sokindregistry.org/registry/7745). Sign up to donate baby clothing and products by following this link (https://babyli.st/michelle-gabriel).
Our volunteers have organized many other fundraising and outreach projects. Students from King’s College put on a benefit concert on January 23, 2016. Members of our committee have organized fundraisers at their workplaces. St. George’s Refugee Sponsorship will also be an official charity in the Bluenose Marathon. Watch this space for more news!
Because of the ongoing success of our fundraising efforts, the Refugee Sponsorship Committee is now pursuing the sponsorship of a second family.

Donations can be made by cheque, addressed to Saint George’s Refugee Sponsorship, or online via Canada Helps. Past updates

Dec 9, 2015: After only a month and a half of fundraising, we have reached $24,000 in donations and pledges. We are on target to meet our goal of sponsoring one family, and perhaps with the generosity of our donors, more than one family. Watch this space or see our Facebook page for more news. Our collaboration with community members from King’s College, St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, and many other backgrounds continues to expand fruitfully. To learn more, come to one of our regular meetings on Sundays at 12:30pm in the Sunday School Room of the Parish Hall. All are welcome.
